I'm on Summer Break!

Hello everyone! Hope you all are having a great weekend~ I didn’t make a june month animation, so here’s one for all the summer months. ^^ (and if it’s not summer for you, please enjoy it anyways because I loved making the color palettes and patterns~)
Photo courtesy of Chibird and thanks to Mimi for sharing it on her blog and leading me to this wonderful site!

As you've probably already guessed from the title of this post, I'm (finally!) on summer break from school! *Cheers and whoops*  It feels absolutely amazing to have so much free time after all those exams and hours of endless study!  I'm not going on holiday this summer but I am doing three weeks of work experience which should be lots of fun, albeit tiring!  Me and my friends will also be having sleepovers and hopefully we will be able to organise many trips to the beach if the weather is nice enough!

I'm looking forward to reading more and of course, I'd like to blog more consistently which has been a struggle for the past few months.  I would like to thank you all again for sticking around, I really appreciate it since I've been awful at updating the blog frequently :( I love you guys <3

I hope you all have a gorgeous summer (or winter) wherever you are in the world!

And here's another beautiful picture I wanted to share with you - a little random but very swoon-worthy, no?  ;)

Note: This picture does NOT belong to me (although I wish the boy in it did!)

Waiting on Wednesday #2

Waiting on Wednesday is a fabulous meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine!  It's a wonderful chance to share the books I'm eagerly anticipating and to find out what my fellow bloggers are looking forward to reading!

Never Enough
From the author of Losing Faith, a novel about two sisters and the eating disorder that threatens to destroy their family. Loann’s always wanted to be popular and pretty like her sister, Claire. So when Claire’s ex-boyfriend starts flirting with her, Loann is willing to do whatever it takes to feel special… even if that means betraying her sister. But as Loann slips inside Claire’s world, she discovers that everything is not as it seems. Claire’s quest for perfection is all-consuming, and comes at a dangerous price. As Claire increasingly withdraws from friends and family, Loann struggles to understand her and make amends. Can she heal their relationship —and her sister—before it’s too late?
[summary taken from Goodreads]

I've been excited for this book ever since I was first made aware of it.  It sounds like such a deep, meaningful read which I'd probably enjoy since I feel there's a lack of YA books that deal with serious issues like eating disorders.  I'm currently on the look out for some heavy reads so I think this one will be perfect!  I can't wait to meet Loann and Claire :)

What are you eagerly anticipating on this particular Wednesday?

Happy reading,

REVIEW: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight
Name: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight
Author: Jennifer E. Smith
Publisher: Headline
Date published: 5th January 2012
Pages: 215
Source: Swapped
Rating: 4 teacups

Who would have guessed that four minutes could change everything?
Imagine if she hadn’t forgotten the book. Or if there hadn’t been traffic on the expressway. Or if she hadn’t fumbled the coins for the toll. What if she’d run just that little bit faster and caught the flight she was supposed to be on. Would it have been something else - the weather over the Atlantic or a fault with the plane?

Hadley isn’t sure if she believes in destiny or fate but, on what is potentially the worst day of each of their lives, it’s the quirks of timing and chance events that mean Hadley meets Oliver...

Set over a 24-hour-period, Hadley and Oliver’s story will make you believe that true love finds you when you’re least expecting it.
[summary taken from Goodreads]

This was one of those books where I thought I would give it 5 stars even before I started reading it.  I just had this feeling that I would love it and while I did, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight wasn't perfect or breathtakingly amazing.

The premise is unique and definitely one-of-kind, have you ever read a book set over 24 hours?  I loved the whole idea of chance and timing and how a mere four minutes changed everything so significantly.  The book started off fantastically: I don't think I've ever read a prologue quite as well-written as this one!  It really set the tone and pace and managed to engage me and make me eager to read on.

The reader is thrown right into the story where we meet Hadley who has just missed her plane by four minutes - little does she know that this will change things in a way she would never have thought.  She has a wedding to attend the next day in London - her father's wedding.  She didn't even want to go but she gave in to her parents' pleas and agreed.  I understood her reluctance: who would want to witness their father marry a woman for whom he left his family?  I pitied her and even though I didn't warm to her that quickly, I thought she was a decent character.  She seemed like a typical teenage girl and the fact that she was just like any other girl made her easy to relate to and likeable.

Enter Oliver, a British Yale student who will be at her side for the next seven hours.  He's gentlemanly, charming and deliciously witty.  I adored him from the moment he and Hadley met.  It was interesting to see how Americans love British guys and think of them as polite gentlemen (if only!)  I'm also amazed by how much they love British accents... usually when people say 'British', they're thinking 'English' and (some) English accents are sooooo much more appealing and swoon-worthy than Scottish accents!  Apologies for digressing!  Anyway, I easily pictured Oliver in my mind and my heart melted at his gentlemanly gestures and at the thought of his oh-so-gorgeous accent <3  If you read the book, I bet you will fall for him just as instantly as Hadley!

It was obvious their chance meeting would bloom into something bigger and watching them confide in each other and taking steps towards romance was just one of the most sweetest things I've read in a long time!  However, I felt the relationship between them was cut short and Oliver doesn't even make an appearance in the second half of the book until the very end.  Despite being warned by a review before reading the book, I was still thoroughly disappointed that I didn't get to see more of the charming British cutie :(  Instead, it's spent on the relationship between Hadley and her father.  It was bittersweet to see them mend their broken hearts and try to make up for lost time but what I really wanted was to hear about Hadley and Oliver fall in love.  I feel the synopsis and even the title (which I adore) are a little misleading.  There is nothing to suggest that a huge chunk will be about her father and while I do like reading about family relationships, it was frustrating that a book with the words 'Love at First Sight' in the name didn't entirely focus on the romance and the electric spark between the characters.  Plus, Hadley's father wasn't exactly a great parental figure so he kept adding fuel to my burning fire of hatred for him.  But to be fair, he does get better...

The ending was cute and incredibly heart-warming and a beautiful way to finish the book.  It does leave the reader to think for themselves and I've just crafted a wonderful future for Oliver and Hadley in my mind :)  I hoped that the ending would be as impressively written as the beginning but I'm actually content with it.

Overall, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight is a sweet book with a unique premise and it achieves bonus points for being primarily set in the sky and London!  The idea behind the story could have been explored further: I managed to savour every moment with Oliver but if he featured more in the book, I would have probably given this 5 stars as I felt it seemed to shy away from the 'love at first sight' aspect.

Waiting on Wednesday #1

I'm delighted to be writing my first ever Waiting on Wednesday post, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine! Most of my favourite bloggers take part in it and I think it's a wonderful chance to share the books I'm eagerly anticipating!

Just Flirt  It’s summer, sweet summer! Self-proclaimed Superflirt Dee Barton can’t wait to spend it practicing her Nine Rules of Flirting on all the cute guys who come to stay at her family’s campground. Why not? Flirting is fun and makes everyone involved feel good—which is pretty much the exact opposite of her relationship with her toxic ex-boyfriend, Blaine.

Sabrina Owens’s summer plans include keeping her over-the-top karaoke DJ mother in check, maintaining her status as the queen of the popular crowd—and being the perfect girlfriend to Blaine. Both girls see each other as the enemy. But when a secret blog embroils them in a frivolous lawsuit, they must team up and embark on a risky, flirt-filled plot to set things right again…and maybe prove they’re not so different after all.

Laura Bowers’s new novel is a heartfelt and hilarious story of friendship, family…and flirting!

Doesn't it sound so fun and amazing?  Flirting, embarrassing mothers, hot tanned guys, what more could you ask for?  This book will definitely be the PERFECT beach read for me and I can't wait to devour it hehe :D  Also, the amazing Riya wrote the loveliest review of it so I'm even more super excited to get my hands on it!

What book are you anticipating?

Happy reading,

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making Blog Tour: Interviews + GIVEAWAY

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making (Fairyland, #1)
Today, it's a pleasure to welcome Catherynne Valente to the blog as part of the blog tour for her wonderful book, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making.  You're in for a treat because I'm sharing an interview with the main character, September, AND Cat herself!  Plus there's also a giveaway at the end...  I really enjoyed reading the book and found it to be a lovely, whimsical read. Click HERE to see my review :)  I hope you enjoy this stop of the blog tour <3

~Interview with September~

Fairy News at Midnight: We’re reporting LIVE from Fairyland and have been granted an exclusive interview with none other than Fairyland’s most famous visitor, September.

You've had many adventures in Fairyland, where’s your favourite place on the island?
Oh, goodness! Everything always happens so fast in Fairyland I hardly have time to see everything, but Pandemonium was just the most extraordinary place. I had to leave so quickly and I’m terribly sorry, I wish I could have wandered the woven streets and seen a fairy parade! I do find cities so marvelous--I’ve only been to Omaha twice, and Pandemonium is ever so much grander and more colorful! Perhaps one day I shall get to go back.

What was it like meeting The Marquess for the first time?
Dreadful! I’ve met unkind girls before, but she was so awfully frightening and strong. I wanted to be brave and good but you just can’t say no to her. She’s like one of those snake charmer’s I’ve seen in picture books. She plays her flute and you sway along. I suppose she is pretty, and I did like her panther, but she made me want to cry and hide and kick her and laugh at her all at once. I suppose that’s what Queens are like. I’ve never met one before! Oh, I know she calls herself a Marquess but that’s what she really is. I wonder if we might have been friends, if things were different and she weren’t Queen of anyplace. She did have such a fancy way of talking.

A-through-L was your most faithful and close companion, any secrets that you can divulge about him for our audience?
Good gracious! Poor Ell wouldn’t like me spilling his secrets all about! Even if secrets DO begin with S and he’s really wretched at keeping them. It’s not much of a secret to say he’s a big, lovely soul who means well even when he breaks things. But I will say that he feels terribly guilty that he’s held up his mother’s side of his heart, being big and lovely and a great thumping Wyvern with fiery breath, but hasn’t carried on his father’s line much. His father was a library, you know, and he hasn’t studied Library Magic even a bit. I think he hopes that once he finds a library that loves him and wants to take him in it’ll all come naturally! I’ve heard from the Green Wind that he’s taken a journey to the outer isles in order to take up an internship with a card catalogue imp, and I do hope it doesn’t take so long that he’s away when I return to Fairyland!

We hear that a new book, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making was released this month chronicling your adventures. Do you think the narrator tells the story accurately and what do you think of Ana Juan’s likeness of you?
Didn’t Miss Juan draw such nice pictures of me? It was awfully kind of her to make me and Ell and Saturday look so fetching. I do especially like how she drew the Key! The Key is off having its own adventures now, but I hope it peeks into a bookstore’s lock and sees how sharp it’s looking on the cover.
The narrator is funny, isn’t she? She says all sorts of things that I think about, but can never quite manage to find the words for. Sometimes she stops the story to have her say, but that’s all right, sometimes you need to stop and contemplate everything that’s happened! I think if the narrator and I ever met, we’d have the most interesting time together!

What’s the one useful thing a young ravished child could pack before entering Fairyland?
Food or a compass! A good hunk of bread and dried meat would do her quite well, and a compass would help her to get her bearings--not that the directions in Fairyland are an obedient lot! But when you first arrive, everything is so confusing, and it’s nice to know one thing surely, which is to say North, because if you know one thing, other things will come to join it, by and by!

And tell us, what is the best tasting Fairy food?
Oh, just everything in the Autumn Provinces was delicious! I had no idea you could make so many things out of pumpkins!

Isn't September just the cutest?  I don't know about you, but I've had great fun 'getting to know' her!  And now over to Cat herself, who will be answering some of my questions...

~Interview with the Author~

Catherynne M. Valente Book and NovelWelcome to A Reading Daydreamer! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi! Well, I’m originally from Seattle on the west coast of America, but I live in Maine now, which is the very topmost tip of the east coast. I actually live on an island off the coast of Portland, Maine, and I have one husband, two dogs, two cats, and six chickens. I like to knit and play the accordion as well as write. I’ve been writing professionally for about eight years now. Fairyland was my tenth novel, but my first for kids.

When did you decide you wanted to become an author?
I always wanted to write, but that’s not the same as always wanting to be a writer. Originally, I meant to be a teacher, but it turned out I was pretty good at writing books. I decided to try to write fiction (I’d mainly been writing poetry before that) when I was 22 and working in a seaside village as a fortune teller. I just wanted to see if I could--I don’t think I intended to be an author until my fourth book came out.

What inspired you to write TGWCFIASOHOM and how did the idea come about?
Fairyland started out its life as a book within a book in my adult novel Palimpsest. It was the protagonist’s favorite childhood novel. When I toured for Palimpsest, people kept asking if it was real, where they could get a copy, could they find it online--and when I said no, they begged me to write it.
The spark of idea came from my old inability to understand Dorothy when I first say the Wizard of Oz film. I didn’t understand why, when faced with magic and witches and adventure, she wanted to go home to a miserable place where her parents were dead and the Depression was on. I would have wanted to stay--so I wrote a book about a girl who wanted to stay.

What was your reaction when you discovered it was going to be published?
I was over the moon. I could never have imagined that a book which began as a crowdfunded online serial would be picked up by a major press and made into such a beautiful physical book. I’m not going to lie, I cried.

If TGWCFIASOHOM was turned into a movie, who could you see playing the lead roles?
I imagine it might be animated, but I think Amandla Stenberg (Rue from The Hunger Games) or Kiernan Shipka (Sally Draper on Mad Men) would be wonderful as September, though I might prefer an unknown. For the voice of Ell, perhaps Stephen Fry or John Rhys-Davies? For Saturday, I think it’s important to find a middle eastern actor, and that probably means an unknown, as child actors of Arabic descent don’t often get much work in the western media. Abigail Breslin would be an amazing Marquess and I would love to see David Tennant as The Green Wind.

The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There (Fairyland, #2)Can you give us a sneak peek of the next book in the series?
The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There is about September’s shadow, who has become Queen of the mysterious underworld known as Fairyland-Below, and is causing a good deal of trouble for topsiders. September has to go underground to fight herself and face the consequences of her choices in the first novel

What is your favourite childhood fairytale?
Snow White. My parents divorced early and I had a stepmother who didn’t much care for me, especially as I have dark hair like my mother and my siblings are all blonde. The story always seemed to be about me somehow. Without the dwarves.

If you could meet any fairytale character, who would it be and why?
The witch from Hansel and Gretel. A candy house is a strange idea--I always thought there was more going on with her than she let on. I’d like to sit down for tea. Witches are always the most interesting women

And finally, do you like to daydream?
Daydreaming is, quite literally, my job. I love it.

Thank you to Cat!  I hope you all enjoyed finding more about the author and September and if you haven't read the book, I hope it's encouraged you to check it out soon.

REVIEW: The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making (Fairyland, #1)
Name: The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making
Author: Catherynne M. Valente

Gather up your courage and your wishes; grab a little pinch of luck - and prepare to be swept away, in a ship of your own making, to a land unlike any other. September is a twelve-year-old girl, Somewhat Grown and Somewhat Heartless, and she longs for adventure. So when a Green Wind and a Leopard of Little Breezes invite her to Fairyland - well, of course, she accepts (mightn't you?).

When she gets there, she finds a land in crisis and confusion - crushed by the iron rule of a villainous Marquess - she soon discovers that she alone holds the key to restoring order. Having read enough books to know what a girl with a quest must do, September sets out to Fix Things.

As September forges her way through Fairyland, with a book-loving dragon and a partly human boy named Saturday by her side, she makes many friends and mistakes; loses her shadow, her shoes and her way. But she finds adventure, courage, a rather special Spoon, and a lot more besides . . .

[summary taken from Goodreads]

There is something really beautiful about Catherynne Valente's writing style.  Her wording and descriptions and the way she builds up her sentences are just stunning!  There were parts in the book where I felt that I had to go back and read some of it out loud or at least linger over the words just to fully appreciate it.  Bizarre - I know!  The style of writing featured definitely deserves top marks for its ornateness: it's as if the author smothered a plain sheet of paper with gems and jewels of scrawling ink, creating a breathtakingly beautiful masterpiece.  I could gush about her writing for ages, but I'll spare you...

I loved the way the book was set out: the third-person narrative was really effective and it truly felt like I was reading a childhood fairytale - with the witty narrator who tells the story adding a touch of light pessimism and suspense.  There's a true whimsical feel to the book, where you abandon your common sense and just believe everything Catherynne Valente tells you and I loved that aspect.

But it was hard for me to get into the book at the beginning and I was incredibly confused by what was going on. I thought: 'There is no hope if the rest is like this!'  Thank goodness everything fell into place later and I didn't need to concentrate too hard on every detail: I was a happy reader :)  My advice would be don't give up on it!

Throughout the book, I was introduced to a colourful array of characters: all quirky and eccentric in their own way.  The main character, September, is a brave, stubborn, courageous 12-year-old who I adored because of her maturity and willingness to stand up for friends and I didn't think she was 'Heartless' at all.  And how can I not mention A-Through-L, her companion the 'Wyverary'?  Apparently he is half-Wyvern, half-library!  Hmm... how can you debate with that? ;)  He was such a good friend and his determination to protect September was adorable. There were many others, from Saturday the blue Marid to Doctor Fallow the Spriggan - oh and there was the little pooka girl who seemed like the dearest, most innocent soul ever!  I felt like I was going to burst with adoration for her!

However, by the end I felt pretty overwhelmed and was just as tired as September.  Don't get me wrong - I loved every member of the bright, cheerful cast! - but I wish the number of characters was cut down to let me get to know each one in more depth - instead of spending a chapter with one and then flying off to meet the next.  The chapters were also a bit long for my liking, it was difficult to find suitable places to stop so make sure you have more time to spare when you read it.  On top of this, the overall book seemed too lengthy as well and while each chapter shaped the story as a whole, some of the chapters could have been shortened and merged with another.

Overall, a sweet whimsical story full of fun and laughter and courage and standing up for what you believe in.  The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland is a modern fairytale for teens, written exquisitely and ornately by a wonderful new author.  I'm looking forward to the next book in the series but I just hope that the flaws I mentioned won't be making an appearance in the following reads!

4 teacups for The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland

Remember to look out for the Fairyland blog tour which will be stopping by on Saturday 16th for an interview, guest post AND a giveaway!
