BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY...THEY GET EVEN.
Lillia has never had any problems dealing with boys who like her. Not until this summer, when one went too far. No way will she let the same thing happen to her little sister.
Kat is tired of the rumours, the insults, the cruel jokes. It all goes back to one person– her ex-best friend– and she's ready to make her pay.
Four years ago, Mary left Jar Island because of a boy. But she's not the same girl anymore. And she's ready to prove it to him.
Three very different girls who want the same thing: sweet, sweet revenge. And they won't stop until they each had a taste.

Jen's Review
Don't kill me guys, but I haven't ever read
anything by Jenny OR Siobhan. However, I still jumped at the chance to read
their co-written novel, since they are like the queens of contemporary. Now, I
had no idea what their writing style was like, so I wasn't really hesitant
about anything; meaning, I went into this book not expecting anything at all. I
just dove in and read. Fortunately, Burn For Burn turned out to be an awesome
contemporary novel with a slight
supernatural twist, and very few flaws.
Burn For Burn is
unlike any contemporary I have ever read. Most of the time, you get the story
of a girl who is having problems with boys, high school, family, etc. But in
Burn For Burn, we get three girls with
all three of those problems. What's more, this story is all about revenge.
Getting back at boys who hurt them, and even an ex-best friend. The plot is
very fun, entertaining, and on-the-edge-of-your-seat exciting! The plot is
quite intricate: we get flashbacks of the girls' histories, as well as current
day happenings. Since the story is told from three different girls'
prespectives, the story itself is more intriguing to read about.
Besides the plot,
the characters were also something I highly adored. Their personalities were
all so different and it was great being able to get a peek at each girls'
thoughts and feelings every other chapter. We have Lillia, an Asian girl (ASIAN
GIRLS, FTW) who is rich and cares deeply of her younger sister, Nadia. Next we
have Kat, a bad-ass punky girl who isn't afraid of a lot of things. Lastly we
have Mary, a self-conscious girl who recently moved back to Jar Island. Their
growing friendship was sweet and I couldn't have asked for better.
There were a couple
things that were off for me, though. First, it was confusing at times as to
when the chapter started off, and you weren't sure who's point of view it is
from. There is no 'Lillian' or 'Kat' at the top of each chapter (or at least in
the ARC format there isn't), and you kind of had to figure it out. Usually it's
obvious, but there are just a myriad of characters and it took me a couple of
pages to wrap my head around it. Another flaw I considered was the supernatural
twist. Now, I'm definitely not sure if it will be brought up again in the
following installments, but I think it was totally unnecessary.
But other than that,
Burn For Burn is an entertaining read that fans of Jenny or Siobhan won't want
to miss out on. The ending KIND OF leaves the reader on a cliffhanger, and I
definitely want to know what happens next to the three girls of Jar Island.
4 Teacups for Burn For Burn!
*Thanks to Simon & Schuster for providing me with
an eARC to review!*
Sounds like an interesting book, love the cover.
ReplyDeleteHmm that's strange... my ARC did have the name of the characters. :/ But I could totally see how it could be confusing if they weren't there.
ReplyDeleteAnd yaay I'm not the only one who hasn't read anything by Han or Vivian! But I definitely will now. x]
This book really surprised me. I don't normally go for the 'fun' type of book, but I really liked this one! And I agree that the supernatural aspect was a little unnecessary.
Great review! ^__^
I hope the finished copy of the book has the names for the chapters. HATE when you have no idea whose head you're in. Still, I'm really looking forward to this book. I'm a big fan of Jenny Han's work. Great review!
ReplyDeleteI thought the ending was VERY abrupt, but I do look forward to seeing what happens next. I'm glad you enjoyed this Jen! :) The only book from these authors I have read before is The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han. I really liked that book so I decided to give this a go too. I enjoyed it overall! :) Great review.
ReplyDeleteI won't be bringing out the swords any time soon, because... uh.... I haven't read anything by Jenny of Siobhan either! You're not alone! I've read some varying reviews for this, so I'm not entirely sure which way my opinion will sway. Fingers crossed I'll enjoy it like you, despite a few flaws you had! Unfortunate about the POV changes, I really hope that is fixed in the final copy. I'm quite curious as to WHAT this supernatural twist exactly is... Glad the girls all had unique and compelling personalities! Fantastic review!
ReplyDeleteLovely review, Jen! I'm so glad you enjoyed this. I haven't read any of Siobhan's book but I've read Jenny Han's Summer series and I enjoyed it. Hopefully this one would turn out good for me too. :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read anything by either of these authors either, although I've seen great reviews for The Summer I Turned Pretty. Great review!
ReplyDeleteOh I've been dying to get my hands on a copy of this for ages! So I'm so so happy that you had fun reading this! I can understand how the chapters can be confusing when they begin with no name of the person the pov is from. A beautiful review Jen, I hope I can read this soon! :)
ReplyDeleteI am curious about this one, everyone seems to be getting it. I haven't read anything like this, but I love the sound of three teenage girls plotting revenge! ;) Thanks for posting - great review, as always, Jen :D xx
ReplyDeleteI was so convinced that this book isn't for me, butI keep seeing all these glowing reviews and now I just HAVE to pick it up! I'm so glad you enjoyed this one, especially as it has multiple POVs and I'm not usually a fan of books like that, but this sounds like such a clever and interesting read. Wonderful review, Jen! :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read anything from either of these authors either, Jen (but I have a bunch of their books!) Excellent review. I'm wondering if there's a romance though? I always need that in my stories. :)
ReplyDeleteThis book has received some really positive reviews around the blogospere and when I first read the blurb I didn't think it would be for me but after reading your praise I think it is definitely going on my TBR pile.
ReplyDeleteThankyou for sharing your wonderful review.
Awesome review Jen! I'm glad you liked it although I definitely think that if you don't write out whose POV you're switching to sometimes it does get confusing. Lol and I love the characters already now that I know there's an Asian girl :) I'm glad you liked this one!
ReplyDeleteLovely review, Jen! I actually just finished Burn For Burn and really enjoyed it too! OMG Must've been super confusing if the names of the characters weren't there! :/ YAY for Asian characters... speaking of characters, weren't they all pretty darn awesome?! Amazing review, sweetie! Now I just have to get around to writing my review. :P <3

ReplyDeleteI obviously missed this one on netgalley :( Oh well, still really interested in reading it, especially as it is co-written by Jenny Han, whom I adore! I say pick up her Summer series, they are great!
ReplyDeleteHahaha...I would totally get mixed up if the names weren't at the top of the chapters...I have hard enough time getting names straight as it is, anyway :)
