And then there was Dorian Havilliard and Chaol Westfall. I adored them both. As the Crown Prince, Dorian was a right charmer and I adored the banter exchanged between him and Celaena. His most attractive feature though was not his flirty ways but rather the fact that wasn't like a typical Royal. Okay, he was occasionally arrogant but he wasn't high and mighty and didn't do things just for his benefit. On the other hand we had the Captain of the Guard, Chaol. I didn't fall for him straight away but he grew on me. I found him to be quite an enigmatic character and I didn't really swoon over his dark glares and moodiness. However as he developed an understanding of Celaena's situation and grew to trust her, I began to place affection on him.
Despite such strong central characters, a minor flaw did appear. THE LOVE TRIANGLE. Usually I don't really mind them and by the end, can have a pretty much certain idea of who I want the girl to end up with. This wasn't the case here: it frustrated me a little. I adored them all as separate characters but the love triangle sadly was a let down. Celaena just couldn't make up her mind! Did she want Dorian? Or was Chaol the man she loved? I couldn't help but feel she was stringing them both along and it actually hurt me to think she might upset them both! I am eagerly anticipating the next book to see this cleared up.
Throne of Glass is a captivating read which gripped me from beginning to end and certainly lived up to my high expectations of it. The plot was perfectly paced and the characters were brilliantly portrayed. Sarah J. Maas is definitely one to watch for - she has a talent for crafting such complex stories, weaving between fantasy, death, magic and romance. I couldn't think of a better book to write a review on to finish 2012 than Throne of Glass.

Beverley's Review
I'm not usually a huge fan of fantasy but the trickle of glowing reviews made resisting requesting Throne of Glass incredibly hard. So I took the plunge into a world of magic, assassins and gorgeous princes.
What struck me first was the world-building. It was simply... perfect. It was written so beautifully: it wasn't overdone, giving you the chance to slowly take it all in and develop an appreciation. Through Mass's elegant prose, I could clearly envision the harsh kingdom in which Celaena Sardothien lived. Maas has a unique style of writing, one which I happily allowed myself to be wrapped in. And the plot... it was so intense and gripping. I found myself flipping through the pages eagerly, hungry for explanations and answers.
Aside from the writing, what really did it for me were the characters. A quick glance at the cover promises a kick-ass, female protagonist and I do adore my strong-willed, determined heroines. Celaena has raised the bar in terms of female-kick-ass-ness. She epitomises the word the world itself and yet brings her own flavour to it. What I loved most was being able to see past the assassin part of her. Despite her job is to kill, her compassion shone through as the book progressed. As her tough facade faded, she was just a broken, delicate girl in need of love which really fascinated me.
And then there was Dorian Havilliard and Chaol Westfall. I adored them both. As the Crown Prince, Dorian was a right charmer and I adored the banter exchanged between him and Celaena. 4.5 Teacups for Throne of Glass! *Thank you to Bloomsbury for the review copy!* |
Yay! So glad you loved this Beverley! Fantasy books are not typically my immediate turn to books either, but this just blew me away. I too at first was like huh what is the fuss all about? But once I had my copy I just couldn't put it down, I was so torn between Chaol and Dorian too! I can't wait to dive into the next book, I'm super excited about which way the story will take us! I totally agree this is the perfect book to end the year with! :)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you about both the world building and the love triangle, Bev! I especially loved the descriptions we got about the salt mines, Endovier, where Celaena had to work. Those descriptions were chilling and very well done. In general, I just love how the author avoided info-dumps, yet was still able to convey all the information about the world that we needed to know so well.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I definitely wasn't fond of the love triangle either. I just felt as if it was a little unnecessary, and that she was playing both guys. I'm firmly Team Chaol, and really didn't like Dorian all that much, except for a few moments. I hope that Celaena finally makes up her mind in the sequel!
Fantastic review Bev! This was definitely a great book to end the year with, I'm sure. =)
Wonderful review, Bev! I think it was the love triangle that utterly ruined this one for me, since it made me so annoyed with Celaena herself and in turn her actions and the story itself. It all sort of tumbled down like a box of dominoes, but I am SO glad you enjoyed it so much. I can't wait to see what you think of the sequel - I'm very on the fence about reading it myself, so I'm very curious to see what you think! :)
ReplyDeleteI really didn't like the love triangle either although I can appreciate it when deployed judiciously. I think part of the problem was that I found them all a bit too arrogant to really connect with. Glad you ended the year on a high note with this book though!
ReplyDeleteI agree that she should make up her mind, but I could understand her in a certain way (even though I'm totally team Chaol :p) I'm SO happy you liked this book, because it was one of my favorite fantasy books from this year! I can't wait to see how this story is going to continue :)
ReplyDeleteI just finished "Falling Kingdoms" by Morgan Rhodes, and wasn't sure if I wanted to jump into another fantasy novel so soon, but your review convinced me to read this one next! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant review, Beverley! I'm so happy to hear that you loved this book because it's one of my favorite book ever. I agree with everything that you mentioned. I loved all of the characters in this book and like you mentioned, the world-building is absolutely stunning.
ReplyDeleteI can understand your frustration with the love triangle. I was bothered by it because I liked both guys too much! Plus, I don't want any of them to wind up sad and heartbroken because they don't deserve it. I'm sincerely hoping the love triangle takes a turn or something in the next book.
Thank you for your comment on my blog. I love your header, especially the warm colors. Looking forward to reading more of your reviews! :)
Your rating system is lovely! I love this review and have been thinking about picking this up for a while! I guess I will now! Can I also just say how beautiful your header is!

Lovely review! I don't read much fantasy either, but you have piqued my interest with this one. I'm glad the MC was a strong, kick-ass character, with something extra underneath. I'm not a huge fan of love triangles, but hopefully the sequel will answer some things.

Great review! I gave the book the same rating but I found the love triangle OK, it was the pacing that knocked down the rating for me. I found it too slow. But apart from that, I really enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing your thoughts <3
ReplyDeleteThis sounds seriously amazing and I can't wait to read it. I love strong world-building and, even more importantly, strong characters. Celaena sounds totally kickass. It's a shame about the love triangle, though. Usually I don't mind them either but if she's stringing them both along then she's not such an amazing protag. Still, it seems minor in comparison to the rest of the book and I'm glad you loved this! Wonderful review, Beverley! :)
ReplyDeleteERMAGAWED RIGHT?!?!??!?!
ReplyDeleteLIKE SERIOUSLY, I DIDN'T PUT IT IN AS MANY AWESOME WORDS AS YOU DID, BUT LIKE THE WORLD BUILDING IS IN THRONE OF GLASS IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS THAT'S EVER HAPPENED TO ME. BESIDES THE IRON FEY, OF COURSE. AND TAYLOR SWIFT. AND SINGING. AND READING. AND BLOGGING. BUT BOOKWISE, YOU GET MY POINT. RIGHT? RIGHT.
OMG I AM SOOOO TEAM CHAOL. LIKE, I'M NOT EVEN JOKING. HE'S LIKE A DIFFERENT KIND OF ASH, BUT HE'S THE SAME ALOOFNESS AND CAELANA?!?!?! OMG SHE WAS HILARIOUS!
HI-LARE-EE-OUS
DUDE AND TRIANGLES WHERE THE PROTAGONIST IS INDECISIVE MAKES ME WANT TO GO, "HEY, LOOK AT THIS PORPOISE! YOU CAN KISS *HIM* INSTEAD! MAKE UP YOUR MIND WOMAN!"
*turns semi-sane*
Awesome review as always Bev! Did I already tell you that? No? I didn't? WHY DIDN'T I?!?!?!
*gets dragged away screaming and kicking*
Great comment Eileen! ^^
ReplyDeleteI really want to read this book and I think this review has made me want it even more!
I have wanted to read this one for a while, but haven't actually read any reviews of it so I'm glad to see you think highly of it! Also, I much prefer that cover to the other one.
ReplyDeleteAnd oh no, not a love triangle! At least it didn't drag the rest of the book down =)
Thanks for the review!
Rinn
Great review, Bev! I have been hearing such mixed things about this book, but all the positive reviews, like yours, still have me interested! The love-triangle does not sound good but I'm sure I could overlook it!
ReplyDeletep.s I've added your blog to our blogroll :D
Great to see you enjoyed this! I really didn't... With the love triangle, I just didn't care about who she ended up with. I didn't think it was the most important thing she could be worrying about. Great review!
ReplyDeleteI really loved this one too!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on the world building - Sarah J. Mass did absolutely AMAZING building a thoroughly described and connected world! I loved how Celeana (did I spell that right?!) had a connection to each of the states (districts? countries? counties?) it made more a well rounded world!
ReplyDeleteAnd on the love? HOLY SMACK TO THE HEART I LOVED IT. :) FAB REVIEW!
