Bonnie and Clyde meets IF I STAY in this addictively heart-wrenching story of two desperate teenagers on the run from their pasts.

They’re young. They’re in love. They’re on the run.

Zoe wants to save Will as much as Will wants to save Zoe. When Will turns eighteen, they decide to run away together. But they never expected their escape to be so fraught with danger....

When the whole world is after you, sometimes it seems like you can’t run fast enough.

Nobody But Us, told in alternating perspectives from Will and Zoe, is an unflinching novel, in turns heartbreaking and hopeful, about survival, choices, and love...and how having love doesn’t always mean that you get a happy ending. Described as “beautiful, heartbreaking, and exhilarating” by Kody Keplinger, author of The DUFF, Nobody But Us will prove irresistible to fans of Nina Lacour, Jenny Han, and Sara Zarr.

Beverley's Review

I saw this book on other blogs.  I fell in love with the synopsis.  I decided I NEEDED this book.  I jumped at the chance to read it.  I began the book, expectations at a high for this promising contemporary romance.  Few chapters in, my hopes fell flat.

I'm going to be honest: I was really disappointed by Kristin Halbrook's debut.  Considering I was eagerly anticipating it, it just didn't deliver on so many aspects.  The only thing I can gladly say for sure was that the dual POVs were handled brilliantly.  Halbrook created two very distinct voices and you could always differentiate between Zoe and Will.

Before I go on to comment on the characters, I must mention the whole 'romance' that's going on.  Zoe and Will claim to be 'in love' with each other and practically every page was dripping with how much they adore the other etc. etc.  Let's just say, there reached a point where it just got annoying.  I was constantly told how much they loved each other, but was shown nothing to see how they did.  Their relationship didn't even seem solid at all - I mean, they'd only been dating for two months, for goodness' sake, before deciding to run away together.  Does two months give you enough time to really get to know the other person?  Can you decide if you want to spend the rest of your life with someone you've only been with for two months?  To me, it wasn't a proper romance - which conflicts with the idea that this is a 'love story'.  Tell me something's a love story and I expect something strong and beautiful, the romance in Nobody But Us was flimsy and just wrong.

Because of this supposed romance, which to me wasn't really a romance, I couldn't connect with the characters.  Zoe was too weak and naive, maybe due to her age of fifteen.  Oh yes... I forgot to mention: Zoe is 15 and Will is 18.  At eighteen years of age, Will is a responsible adult.  He should be using his common sense and realise that running away with a girl three years his junior is not going to end well.  I could forgive Zoe for being innocent and wanting to be loved after such a traumatic childhood but I couldn't STAND Will's impulsiveness and anger.  That guy really needed to control his temper and stop putting his girlfriend in danger.  If he truly loved her, he wouldn't have dragged her further and further until there was no way of going back.  True love is when you genuinely care for the other person and want the best for them.  This wasn't the case in Nobody But Us.

The story had so much potential to be something with emotional depth but it was put aside in favour of the 'romance.'  Zoe's mother died when she was young and for years, she has had to put up with an abusive father while Will was abandoned by his young mother and put in care.  Both of their pasts could have been reached into to give these characters real depth but it was only touched upon at times and I could never really realise the full extent of their terrible pasts, making it more of an inevitably hopeless love story to roll your eyes over than a story about two people mending each others' broken heart.

The ending, I must admit, came as a shock.  It took me a few seconds to get a grasp on things, but when I put the book down, I realised it was a reasonable way to conclude despite the surprise factor.  It was out of the blue and I did not expect it at all but to be really honest, I didn't care about what happened to our 'lovestruck' pair because I had stopped caring long before.

Overall, Nobody But Us was a somewhat disappointing read with a lacklustre romance.  Despite being let down by the relationship between the two lead characters, the book was actually strangely addictive and I wanted to hurry up and get to the end to see what the outcome was for the couple (either that, or I just wanted to finish the book and get away from it all!).  Even though I didn't enjoy it as much as I would've liked, I suggest you pick it up if you're interested in it because it may be the book for you!

2 Teacups for Nobody But Us

  1. Oh, no! I was really hoping to love this book? For me, it would probably be more disappointing because of the fact that it has been hyped up so much! For it not to live up to the expectation ... it just becomes this huge let down. I might still check it out, since it wasn't a completely unbearable book for you, though. Thanks for the review!

  2. my sister read this book and had the exact same issues as you. She didn't believe in the romance and got annoyed at how much they said I love you to each other without actually showing their love. and my god, 2 months? that would annoy me to no extent.. i know what the surprise is since my sister told it to me and wow, that is a way to end the novel.

    great review!

  3. I've noticed that this book doesn't have the greatest reviews :/ I know it has it's flaws but I am so enticed to read it anyways. I don;t think at 18 you are really an adult. You still are really a kid but yeah. He should have known not to do that especially since he already had all this baggage with him. He doesn't need to put it on her. 2 months... sigh. I still want to read it. I'm a sucker for this plot.

  4. Good honest review, sorry you didn't enjoy it as much as you hoped. I hate that the love wasn't shown because that would be so annoying and two months love doesn't seem real enough to run away.

  5. *Claps* YES BEV. EXACTLY WHAT YOU SAID UP THERE. MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY. I'm all for young love and finding "the one" when you're in your teens, but the two of them aren't "in love". Before long, I can guaratee Will will slam his fist into her face when he loses control...And Zoe! Urghhh she annoyed me SO MUCH! I can sympathise with her and everything, but being so weak and not doing anything to change really annoyed me!! She'll never be able to save herself if Will suddenly became uncontrollable!! That ending actually surprised me as well! I didn't *care* for it...but I think it was the perfect way to end it :) Anyway, fabulous review Bev<3 I hope Halbrook's next book will be better:)

  6. I've been seeing negative reviews for this book everywhere, but it's still a shame this disappointed you, Bev. From what you've said, I'd be highly irritated with this book as well, especially the romance angle, and the characters don't seem to be my cup of tea either. I hope your next read is more compelling and thanks for the honest review, dear!

  7. Aww, I'm sorry this was such a disappointment for you, Bev! I was on the border of requesting this one and not, so I'm kind of glad that I didn't, honestly. Considering this entire book is surrounded around romance, it pretty much sucks that the romance is pretty terrible. =( I mean, it kind of seems like insta-love, with the pretense of the romance being stretched out for two months. Because how is it possible for you to realistically run away with someone once you've been dating someone for 2 months? Crazy. The lack of character development would irritate me to no end as well. Unfortunately, it appears as if I'll be staying FAR away from this book.

Thanks for this honest review, Bev! <3

  8. Aww! I'd been looking forward to this book for months - and then there was a sudden influx of negative reviews! I'll probably read this book, but rather than buy it, I think it'll be a library read. I'm interested in seeing how the dual POV's and the shocking ending work out!

    Fantastic review!

  9. I actually found the romance very believable as it was of two very young people who didn't really have a standard for what love and romance are and should be. I am interested in the promise of Halbrook's writing and hope her next story is more to my (and your) taste.

  10. Awww! I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy this, Beverley. I have seen quite a few mixed reviews of this one so I don't think I'll try it. If the book is based around romance and that is the thing that didn't work then it doesn't sound very good. I like the cover though! Thanks for the honest review! :)

  11. Disappointing books are the worse. I can handle a bad book, but if a book I've been anticipating for so long doesn't deliver, it's just.. I hate that feeling. I'm sorry to hear this was such a book for you. I can see why you didn't like the romance and the constant telling of how much they love each other, yuck. I wasn't planning to read this book anyway, so it looks like I made a good decision :p

  12. Sorry to hear this was disappointing :( Many of the issues you mention annoyed me in another book that I was eagerly anticipating, so I think this one wouldn't be my thing either.
    Great and honest review :)

  13. Wonderful review, Beverley! I think I'm pretty certain now that this isn't for me. I probably couldn't read this without constantly disagreeing with the main characters' choices, which is hardly ever a good thing. I'm sorry it fell flat for you, especially as you had high expectations for it. It seems like most reviewers have had the same reaction...

  14. I just read this book and found that I just couldn't love this book like I wanted it too. I was expecting a gut wrenching book with all the FEELS but honestly this book just wasn't it :(
