Mackenzie and Amy were best friends. Until Amy was brutally murdered.
Since then, Mac’s life has been turned upside down. She is being haunted by Amy in her dreams, and an extremist group called the Trackers has come to Mac’s hometown of Hemlock to hunt down Amy’s killer: A white werewolf.
Lupine syndrome—also known as the werewolf virus—is on the rise across the country. Many of the infected try to hide their symptoms, but bloodlust is not easy to control.
Wanting desperately to put an end to her nightmares, Mac decides to investigate Amy’s murder herself. She discovers secrets lurking in the shadows of Hemlock, secrets about Amy’s boyfriend, Jason, her good pal Kyle, and especially her late best friend. Mac is thrown into a maelstrom of violence and betrayal that puts her life at risk.
Kathleen Peacock’s thrilling novel is the first in the Hemlock trilogy, a spellbinding urban fantasy series filled with provocative questions about prejudice, trust, lies, and love.

My Review
I didn't expect myself to love this book as much as I did, I half-expected that it would be another flimsy 'werewolf' book. I've shied away from paranormal fiction for a while, just because there were so many - too many - vampire and werewolf books being released after the increased popularity of The Twilight Saga. But I thought it was about time to 'dip' back into the world of paranormal and I'm so glad I started off with Deadly Hemlock, which totally exceeded my expectations.
What I loved most about it was that it was far from your typical 'werewolf' book - it's so much more than a soppy love story and doesn't follow the path werewolf fiction usually follows. It deals with grief, loss, friendship, family, love and trust - things which makes this book all the more beautiful and heart-breaking.
The storyline is pretty unique, I especially like the way Kathleen Peacock crafted the werewolf virus into the 'Lupine syndrome'. I wasn't sure what I'd make of it at first but I can now say, I LOVED it! Kathleen Peacock writes so evocatively that you can't help but be enchanted by the words on the page.
Match gorgeous prose with a cast of diverse characters and you have the perfect read! We have Mac, who is so brave and so protective of her friends that you end up wishing you had a friend like her. To me, her quest to find answers wasn't selfish at all. It was more like she had a need to seek closure and put an end to the nightmares that haunted her. There's Kyle who I ADORED! He was so sweet and protective and selfless - qualities that made me fall completely head over heels for him. I didn't exactly fall for Jason though. Yes, I understand he was distraught from his girlfriend's death but destroying yourself by getting drunk and stirring up fights and joining the Trackers - an anti-werewolf extremist group - isn't going to help, is it?
Another aspect which I loved was how Kathleen Peacock created an entire new breed of 'crazy ex-girlfriend' - she took the concept and ran with it! Her way of using not-so-original ideas and putting her twist on it was prominent throughout the book and only enhanced it's ability to captivate the reader.
I was panicking at the ending because loose ends weren't entirely tied together but then I found out that it's the first of a trilogy so I am absolutely relieved. I'm already craving more of Kathleen Peacock's writing so I am definitely anticipating the next novel! And wow, I couldn't believe it when the murderer was revealed - I had a total gasping, 'Ohmigosh' moment. The twists will ultimately take you by surprise!
Overall, Deadly Hemlock is a special book you won't want to miss. It is a completely different take on werewolf fiction and has much more depth than you would expect. I was captivated from page one and the storyline flowed perfectly, mixed in with characters who each had their own flaws which only made them more real. Read it or regret missing out on some seriously kick-ass werewolves!
5 teacups for Deadly Hemlock! |

I SO have to read this book! I'm okay with werewolf novels--but hearing that Kathleen does a new take on werewolves, I freaking have to pick this up! I'm actually still quite the sucker for Paranormal Romance. . . :) I can't wait to read about Kyle! I love me some sweet boys. This book seems absolutely perfect, thanks for your input Beverley! <3 Great review, I'm bumping this one up on my TBR!
ReplyDeleteI really want to read this one too! It sounds amazing! Brilliant review Beverley ;) And I'm just a sucker for fantasy/paranormal stories and werewolves with a twist... you definitely caught my attention. Thanks for sharing and I'm definitely going to get this one soon <3

Well now you have me convinced because I'd previously thought I wouldn't bother with yet another werewolf book but I like that it's a virus (reminds me a bit of The Wolves of Mercy Falls series) and Mac and Kyle sounds like characters I want to read about. Lovely review, Beverley
ReplyDeleteOoh, this sounds really good. I'm gonna search for the book on GoodReads now.
ReplyDeleteFantastic blog, btw!
Awesome review Beverley!!!!! Its so hard to find good paranormal books now that there is so many, but i'm glad this book leaves a mark!!!!! I love hearing how good this book is! It makes me wish my TBR pile was smaller so I could dive into this book immediately.
ReplyDeleteSo glad that the mystery revelation is surprising!!!!

Fantastic review, Beverly! Werewolf-themed novels don't usually work for me but your review sounds so convincing so I think I will have to check this one out soon. Can't wait to meet this Kyle guy, he seems like a very likable guy! And I'm very curious about this new breed of'crazy ex-girlfriend'! Haha! :D
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you enjoyed this one, Beverley! I wasn't a huge fan of the love triangle in this novel, but as far as werewolf stories go, it was one of better ones for sure! Plus, I loved the mystery elements and Kyle was soo sweet, wasn't he? ;) Wonderful review!(:

Great review! I've not read this yet, but the werewolfism being a virus looks really good. And crazy ex girlfriend on a new level...heck yes. :)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds really great and I've been meaning to read it for a while. I'm positive I will like it. Thanks for the helpful review, Beverley! :) I hope I can get around to it soon.
ReplyDeleteFantastic review! :) I also really loved this one, and I gave it four stars even after I was in a reading slump and this book got me out of it! I also love the originality of the idea and once again, your review kicks butt :)
ReplyDeleteTHAT'S IT. *slams fist down on table* I'M READING THIS NEXT. I was considering making it my next read anyway, so after reading your review? Yeah, you pretty much soldified it :D I love that this is a different take on werewolves and doesn't follow along the same ol' boring paranormal love story. I'm so excited to delve into the politics of the world and meet these fabulous characters... AND this shiocking twist with the murderer!! I LOVE when I can't guess who the baddie is or predict how things are going, so it's promising to hear this. AWESOME review!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah I definitely loved Kyle too and I certainly disliked Jason-I hate the rich jerky boy. This was a cool entry into the werewolf lit category and I'm interested to see what happens next.
ReplyDeleteWOO HOO!!! I'm so glad you loved this one too Beverley! I went into this one thinking it would be a pretty standard YA werewolf story as well, and I was so excited when I was proven wrong. Love it when that happens. Why must YA books come out a year apart? That's just cruel if you ask me. I need the next book today!
ReplyDeleteI just now put together what book this is. We have a different cover in the US but I love this cover too! I love a great mystery and seeing your 5 stars has me eager to pick this up! Great review Beverly. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that this book provides a new, original way for a popular subject. It's the same as The immortal rules, which made me fall in love again with vampires. I'm really can't wait to get started and your review only adds to my excitement. The characters sound awesome ^^
ReplyDeleteAnd wow, 5 teacups, that must mean something :D
What I also like is how the covers are so different. I like them both, but I think I prefer the other one - I like those colors more ^^
I've hear so many amazing things about this book, but have yet to pick it up! I really should, shouldn't I? Everybody seems to love it. :) I've never really read a werewolf book, but this one sounds like a fabulous one to start with. Wonderful review, Beverley!
ReplyDeleteFab review Beverley! I too have been avoiding paranormal reads for a while, but ever since this book came out I've been hearing fantastic reviews, so I'm glad that you loved this too! Especially as it provided so much more than the typical reads we've had recently! :)
ReplyDeleteI love the sound of this one (and the cover) so I'm not sure why I haven't picked it up yet. Your review is fantastic and has definitely persuaded me to seek it out. I'll have to get around to reading it soon!
