The Rules for Disappearing

The one thing that stands out for me when I first heard about The Rules for Disappearing was the fact that it's about the Witness Protection Program. I had never read anything like it before, so I was instantly curious and itching to read it. This book, more than ever, is a mystery. But more importantly, I felt that it was stronger as a romance, and a self-realization type of story. While this book was an entertaining read, it's not the most memorable.

One of the main factors that slowed down this book for me was that the overall plot of the story is interesting, but the pace gets slower as the reader gets closer and closer to the end. You'd expect the opposite: a mystery leading up to a fast-paced climax of the story, but personally for me, I was getting sleepier by each page. I loved the concept of the Witness Protection Program, but the mystery wasn't all that amazing. We got introduced to the story behind it all, and it was one of those "Okay, nodding my head, I'll go along with it, but I don't NEED to know what's happening" type of situations. It was fun to read about, but not gripping or heart-racing in any way. And the ending? So disappointed. It ended so abruptly, and the mystery was solved way too easily, leaving the reader wanting more of a mind-blowing resolution.

What's more strange, is that I absolutely LOVED the romance-- it's the strongest point in the whole novel-- but I didn't like the main character, Meg, independently. Meg alone is a sullen character, and she literally has no self-control. Sure, I understand that she's tired of moving so much and that she should keep to herself, but just because meeting a cute boy in a new town does NOT mean you can lose all control and fall in love with him, especially when you're under strict WPP rules. However, I'm glad this romance happened because it's seriously so sweet; I could taste the sugar on my tongue whenever they were together! Ethan, the love interest, doesn't hesitate to help and find out about Meg, and he was just the kindest, most endearing male specimen ever. SWOON, much?

In all, while the plot and mystery were pretty slow-going, the romance did it all for me. The romance was what kept me reading, and it's really something you don't want to miss out on if you're a romance junkie (like me). The Rules for Disappearing doesn't have the most memorable plot, but it is still a fun, quick mystery.

Summer. When the sun's rays are shining down on your bare shoulders, when your ice cold glass of lemonade is freezing your hand off, even though the rest of your body is on fire. Summer, when your life is carefree. Summer, when sometimes, you discover who you are and who you're meant to be with. Summer, when you maybe find your summer romance.

Nantucket Blue was very much all of these things. It's quite the enjoyable perfect summer read, with it's distinct setting on an island off the coast, friendship problems, family problems, and of course, the boy problems. Although I had a few problems with it here and there, Nantucket Blue definitely prepped and got me excited for summer.

My favorite aspect of Nantucket Blue for sure was the setting. Leila Howland did a fabulous job creating the mood and picture of the story-- the island with its boat docks, little shops, sandy beaches, and bikes everywhere instead of cars. The picture was very clear and was accessibly easy to settle into the story. Perhaps it was the setting that I wanted to return to every time I wasn't reading this book, but I don't think Howland could have down a better job with it. It seriously makes me crave summer so much more!

And you know those contemporary novels that have a bunch of little mini problems that pop up here and there in the story, and they just somehow intertwine together to make an interesting story? Leila Howland was able to perfect that. The original plot with Cricket and her best friend Jules moving to Nantucket for the summer slowly turns into a whirlwind of problems amongst themselves, their parents, drama with boys, and more. All of these elements combined formed an intriguing plot line that I couldn't stay away from. I always wanted to know what happened next!

However, I did have some minor issues with the main character, Cricket, and the romance. Cricket was an okay character for me, but I never really felt a closeness or connection with her. Her obsession with her ex-best friend's family was a little intense and weird. The romance starts off as pure lust. Then, the love interest shifts into something that was uncomfortable to read about, but later on I grew more comfortable with it. I just have really mixed feelings about it, and I think it could have been done differently.

Aside from some minor problems with the main protagonist and the summer romance, I really enjoyed Nantucket Blue for its wonderfully vivid setting and well-thought out plot line. I definitely recommend it if you're looking for a quick summer read for reading on the beach!

Ever since I laid eyes on the cover for Chantress by Amy Butler Greenfield, I knew I had to read it. Without a doubt. But this cover isn't just pretty on the outside. Between the flaps of this gorgeous book is a magical tale with beautiful prose, a creative plot line, and endearing characters that I loved from the start. Chantress is a historical fantasty that you won't want to miss.

First off, I'd like to mention the concept of this book that's intriguing and definitely something that's not typical out there in the YA fantasy world. Chantresses, the fantasy element in this book, are kind of like witches/fairies, but not at all in any way at the same time. Greenfield spices things up by adding little sprinkles of her own imagination and creativity here and there. I really enjoy how she introduces the topic mildly and not in any confusing way. Thankfully there's no info-dump, which is the worst. Greenfield skillfully weaves in Chantress information in a sneaky way that helps the reader learn about the idea along with the main character Lucy, since she starts out in the beginning of the story not knowing that she is a Chantress. What's more, Chantress is set in a historical time period (mid 1600s, which is what I'm studying in History class!), and it's surprisingly interesting to read about (usually I'm like, "History? SNOOORE). Set in London, I think that Greenfield was able to capture the dialogue of the time fabulously. The tone of the era was executed well, and I couldn't have asked for better.

Probably one of my favorite aspects of all in this novel is the characters. Lucy, the young woman who learns that she is Chantress, is easily lovable, as well as a hard-working character. There's something about her curiosity to learn more and to try her very best to use magic appropriately that is just admirable. In the middle of the book, it's evident that she works persistently to use magic, since her mentor scolds her endlessly, and she never gives up. Additionally, Nat is also a character I learned to fall in love with. Starting off as a cold, rude character, his heart opens up for Lucy and their very subtle romance is heart warming. I have no complaints for any of the characters in Chantress. They are all simply amazing and realistic.

Finally, the plot line is very well paced in this novel. It starts off with a bang (not literally), and I knew from the start that I was going to love this book. Chantress held my attention until the very end, and even then I didn't want to let go of this world and characters that Greenfield has created for us. It's not always fast-paced, but it's just enough to keep the readers engaged and interested in the story. It also helps that Greefield's writing is lush and flowy.

Chantress is definitely a book that every reader needs to pick up. I'm not a big historical or fantasy YA fan, but look who loved it? I DID. That's right, this book has it all: an enchanting concept that stands out, extremely delightful characters, and an absorbing plot. Go pick this up, you won't regret it!

When I'd been in fourth grade, my parents didn't get along so great. That year, I biked the five miles from my house to Lia's practically every day. The stuff with my folks eventually evened out, but ever since, I'd more or less been adopted by Lia's family.

I grabbed the knife and went out to set it on the table. "Go put on your suit." Lia elbowed me, frowning at my lavender skirt and white T-shirt. The basketball guys had just dropped in -- about eight of them, all wearing cutoffs. Lia's other friends, Brooke and Grace, were decked out in jeans and tank tops. Lia was the only one in a swimsuit. A brand-new cherry-red bikini, and it showed off her tan perfectly.

I went over to the lawn chairs, grabbed my bag, and made an act of riffling through it. I knew what I'd find.

"I can't believe I forgot to bring it," I had to tell her a minute later. By then Lia was asking Hank from basketball which of the four city high schools he'd go to next year. The question sent a zing of excited nervousness through me. High school! Lia rolled an unbelieving eye at me. I tried not to act guilty. I hadn't forgotten my swimsuit. It was right where I'd left it. At home. The thing was, lately I'd been… well, developing like a Polaroid picture. When I'd tried my suit on that afternoon, it didn't fit. My plan had been to wallflower it up by the onion dip while Lia flirted with Kevin, who hadn't arrived yet.

"Cam… den," Lia whined. She adjusted her bikini and heaved a sigh. "My yellow swimsuit's in the dresser. Go put that on."

I knew the yellow suit. One-piece, old, and ugly. Lia wore it for swim meets last year.

"I'm fine," I said.

"Please," she whispered, smiling nervously as Brooke and Grace walked over. "I'm the only one in a suit. Super please?"

Lia made puppy eyes at me that were impossible to resist. So I nodded, and she hugged me, and I trudged into the house. The sliding glass door closed on Lia's laughter as the basketball guys threatened to throw each other into the pool.

When I finally found the yellow swimsuit, stuffed in the back of Lia's bedroom dresser, it was uglier than I remembered. It was even worse on, making me look like a weird fried egg, my thighs the color of the white. I spend a few minutes telling myself how nervous Lia was, waiting for her crush to show up, standing around practically naked, by herself. It wouldn't hurt me to look a little ugly for one stupid party. Then I told myself Lia would totally owe me.

On my way out, I stepped on a bag from Girl from Ipanema swimwear shop. When it crinkled under my foot, I could tell there was something there. Slowly, I pulled it out. It was a bikini, in a bunch of different shades of green. Lia must have bought two and decided last-minute on the red. That was so completely like her. Probably, with all the craziness of getting the party together, she'd forgotten to mention it.

I held it up in the mirror. Thing was scandalous pretty. I tried it on.

I actually look good, I thought, shocked as I twisted and turned in front of the mirror. Unlike my swimsuit at home, this fit me perfectly. I mean, I didn't even look like myself. And since my other option was fried egg…

I walked back to the party. At the sliding glass door, I had to do a little happy dance for my BFF-- Kevin had arrived. He stood with Lia, right next to the Jacuzzi. He slouched as she talked, his hands in his jeans pockets, tossing his head every few minutes to get his glossy brown hair out of his eyes.

The underwater lights for the pool were on, and the sky was twilight. Hank peeled off his shirt, cannon-balled into the water, and came back up, laughing. One of his buddies dove in after, and Grace laughed. Out of nowhere, Hank caught my eye and smiled at me. Completely giddy, I sort of pranced down the path toward Lia.

"Whaddaya think?" I asked, pointing at the suit and laughing. I though Lia'd laugh, too. Instead, Kevin let out a low whistle.

"Whoa there. Niiiii-ce," he said, checking me out. I blushed, embarrassed by his tone. I didn't know what Lia saw in him. "You are smoking hot." He grabbed my hand and spun me like we were dancing. I heard myself giggle, but I could see Lia's face going red. I was messing up her plan. Worse, I was hurting her somehow. I pulled my hand away.

"That's not the yellow suit," she said. "It's my brand new one."

Brooke came over. "Isn't that Lia's new suit?" she asked, which made me mad, because Brooke was just saying it because Lia had said it. My best friend flashed the fakest smile I'd ever seen. It hit me like a ton of bricks: She hadn't forgotten about the green bikini at all. She'd wanted me to look ugly.

Declan was helping Sophie manage the last few yards to the door when Anat's cry pierced the hot, stagnant air. He whipped around and spotted her bounding across the parking lot-- paces ahead of an enormous, dark shape.

"Holy mother,"  he said. "It's a feckin' bear!"

"Oh my God," Sophie gasped.

Nico and Yosh had already reached the entrance. If he and Sophie ran, they'd be able to join them and bolt the door. But Anat...

The branch in her hands look pitifully small. Even a gun probably wouldn't bring down an animal that size, at least not with a single shot. As the bear charged, its mouth fell open, tongue lolling to the side. It was impossibly fast. There was no way she'd make it.

Declan shoved Sophie forward, yelling, "Get everyone inside and close the door!"

Heart pounding, he kept his eyes on Anat. She was fifteen feet away... then ten... the bear had narrowed the gap, she could probably feel its breath on the back of her neck.

"I said run, you idiot!" she screamed as she passed him.

"Blood ungrateful," Declan muttered. He hefted the garbanzo bean can up with both hands. Summoning all his strength, he heaved it. Direct hit-- it smacked the bear on the snout. The animal shook its head, but barely broke stride. 

Not exactly the effect he'd been hoping for-- and now the bear looked pissed to boot. Declan spun on his heels and raced toward the door. He quickly caught up with Anat, whose long legs chewed up the pavement.

"That was a bad plan," Anat panted.

"Everyone's a bloody critic. Apologies for trying to save your arse."

"I don't need your help," she gasped.

"Right, you had that completely under control. You can thank me later, if..." The words died in his throat as he checked back over his shoulder. The bear was coming up fast, and they were still ten feet from the door. They weren't going to make it. Declan pictured it all with awful clarity: the giant paw slashing across his back, followed by teeth clamping down on his throat. Distracted by the image, he stumbled and went sprawling. He landed hard on his chest, getting a mouthful of dirt. In desperation he flung both arms over his head.

Nothing happened. 

His breath came in hard, sharp pants.

Cautiously, Declan lowered his arms.

The bear was gone.

Of all things, Stung was definitely an interesting read to say the least. It wasn't jaw-dropping amazing, but it wasn't bored-to-tears awful, either. Pretty much somewhere in between. In my opinion, Stung was moderately creative, but also your typical post-apocalyptic story. The concept behind the reasoning for the chase and action is awesome: bees being extinct and a flu that turns humans into beasts. But the rest of the plot was a bit boring and vague itself. Up until the halfway point, I had no idea where this book was going. Everything was kind of hidden in that cryptic way and there was no explanation as to what was happening. It's a little annoying at first, to put it nicely. Thankfully, the plot picked up later on.

The plot for the second half was gripping and intense. The characters are constantly on the run from society. You all know those chase scenes are lovable and extremely awesome. I'm one of those people who highly enjoy these parts in the story, therefore my liking for this book increased. It kept me intrigued and wanting to know what happened next.

Now the characters are a curious thing in Stung, as was the romance. Since finishing the book, I am still not quite sure what to think about them. I didn't particularly connect with them on any emotional level; these characters were just kind of there. Fiona, the main protagonist, wakes up from a coma, so it was bit difficult to sympathize with her when she didn't really know what was going on half the time. And Bowen, the love interest, was your typical guy-- nothing special. Their romance can definitely be considered insta-lovey. I was not a fan of this, but I can see how their romance developed after trying to survive together for a week.

To sum up my thoughts, readers will enjoy Stung if they are a fan of post-apocalyptic stories with lots of action, chase scenes, and an addicting plot. While lacking in the character and romance department, Stung was enjoyable and can pass as a quick action-packed story.

My question for Bethany Wiggins:  How did the idea for Stung come about? (What was your inspiration?)

Inspiration is a funny thing! You never know when/where/how it will hit. The story of how STUNG came into existence is this:

The first was an early morning nightmare that woke me from a dead sleep (I usually don't wake up from nightmares, let alone remember them!). This nightmare was so vivid and riveting, I wrote it down and it became chapter one of STUNG. 

Also, I started writing STUNG at the time the swine flu scare was running rampant through the USA. I watched these crazy people on the news who were swarming the health departments, frantic to the point of violent to get the swine flu vaccine for their kids, and it made me wonder, "What if the government told us there is this huge flu to scare us into taking a vaccine that is really going to harm us?" 

Lastly, I remember getting a Discovery Magazine that talked about the decline of bees. And all of sudden, it was like a puzzle clicking into place. I had everything I needed to write a book. And that is the recipe for STUNG!

Beverley's Review

Things I Can't Forget was one of those books I just knew I had to read and I had heard endless praise for Miranda Kenneally's other contemporaries.  I had high expectations and Things I Can't Forget didn't disappoint, balancing serious issues and self-discovery and romance in one delightful, thought-provoking concoction.

Kate Kelly really stood out to me as a character.  She wasn't afraid to let her thoughts be heard and she stood very strongly by her beliefs - something I really admired in her.  I can see why this can be bad in some situations and I understand why some bloggers really loathed her in the beginning but I really took a liking to her.  I must admit the religious element of the book took me by surprise as I wasn't expecting it but I enjoyed reading from Kate's perspective.

What I loved most was the way Kate developed as the book progressed.  Although I'm not religious, I could immediately relate to her in that as you grow up, you begin to question your beliefs and the world around you.  Kenneally portrayed this superbly and provided lots of space for Kate to grow and understand that in having your own beliefs, you must accept others' too.  I always love character development and it was spot on in Things I Can't Forget - something which makes it all the more memorable.

Other than the weighty issues like pregnancy and teenage sex, there's a nice romance weaved in.  Matt was incredibly cute and I adored him.  He also attended church but was not as firm as Kate in his beliefs and more accepting that not everyone has the same opinions as him.  I loved the way Kate could learn from him and how he wasn't pushy for the physical side of the relationship.  He was a true gentleman and it was refreshing to read about a relationship which wasn't too physical.  He many not have completely won me over, but he was a very strong contender.

Overall, Things I Can't Forget was a thought-provoking read which dealt with interesting issues.  The main characters were a delight to read about, with wonderful support from the secondary characters and the romance was sweet and sure to be a hit with readers.  Miranda Kenneally's prose is neither fancy nor flowery, yet still succeeds in conveying the message that everyone's beliefs matter.

The Inspiration behind Shadow Eyes

Thank you for hosting me, ladies!  I’m honored to be here and to share with you my unique inspiration for my YA urban fantasy, Shadow Eyes!

Obviously, stories don’t just magically materialize out of thin air, and, poof, you have a story.  It would be nice if it happened that way, but generally writers have sources of inspiration that then morph – several times – into an actual idea for a story. Some things that inspire us may be so small we don’t even realize it, but others are fairly elaborate – like the basis of inspiration for my novel.

The idea for Shadow Eyes actually first came to me as a screenplay for a Christian horror movie.  I know.  That’s not really a genre.  But it should be.  Anyway, the movie would have been about a cast of intertwined characters going about their lives and making mistakes with dark, creepy shadows (demons) hovering around them, whispering to them, and influencing them to do evil things.  Only the audience would see the shadows.  The characters would be completely oblivious.  The ultimate dramatic irony!  (Sorry, I’m an English teacher.)  I could see it all in my head, and it was awesome!  But I had no idea how to write a screenplay.

A few years after I’d had that idea, my friend suggested I should write a novel like the paranormal angel books we’d been reading and loving.  I’d always loved the concept of angels and demons in stories and immediately thought back to that screenplay idea.  After a lot of thought on how to make the story work for a novel, I decided on a 17-year-old narrator, Iris, who had a special ability to see the shadows, as well as light figures (angels), but nobody else could. 

The more the story developed in my mind, the crazier I was about it.  All the mysterious characters, the twists and turns, the big mystery about what happened to Iris when she was 14 that first gave her the ability, her making mistakes and discovering who these characters were and, more importantly, who she was – all of it just fell into place on an outline out of my crazy, overly-creative, overly-stimulated mind.  Shadow Eyes, my pride and joy, my baby, is the result.

"It ruffled my petticoats as I leaned under the mantel. I gasped as the light from the candle illuminated a narrow spiral staircase descending into the inky shadows below. The dank scent of mold and dust wafted up from the depths.

I paused, listening again for any sound, any sign that I had disturbed the sleeping household. There was nothing but stillness, and I felt an irresistible urge to explore the passage.

I ducked through the fireplace, bending low to keep from brushing against the cinder-blackened walls. The smell of ash clung to my skin as I found myself standing on the edge of the first stair. It felt like ice beneath my stocking-clad feet.

There were probably rats.

I took a step, sheltering my candle, my only source of light.

It could be a passage to an old catacomb.

I took another step.

There might be skeletons and all sorts of unpleasantness.

My foot moved forward again.

I would be trapped in the dark, buried forever. No one would hear me. No one could help" (51-52).

This particular scene gave me the shivers! It made me want to find out more what was happening in the story. Doesn't it sound good? :D

The Nightmare Affair caught my attention immediately after I read the synopsis for it. The concept of Nightmares, a murder mystery, and taking place at a boarding school completely drew me in. The Nightmare Affair was one of my most anticipated reads of 2013, and it was a bit of a letdown, but nonetheless a good read. This novel had its strong points, like the concept and plot, but things like characters and romance didn't work well for me.

First and foremost, I was not disappointed by the thing that drew me in in the first place: the concept. Arnett definitely intrigues the reader with a unique, never-before-seen idea of yes, witches, demons, and sirens, but also Nightmares. I'll let you to find out exactly what Nightmares are, but it was described very well and I loved how different it was apart from the usual paranormal we see today. It's fresh and a definitive plus side to the book. The way of explanation wasn't done the best; it was a bit in the form of info-dumping, but hidden in the way of a teacher explaining to the main character, Dusty. Not only was the idea of Nightmares fantastic, but the plot was paced pretty well. I always wanted to know more. I was constantly eager to find out who this killer was. The twist in the end was unexpected, unless I'm totally unobservant. Alas, these are the only things I enjoyed in The Nightmare Affair.

One of the prominent issues with my enjoyment for The Nightmare Affair was the lack in character depth. In other words, I had a really hard time connecting with Dusty, Selene, or Eli. They were all fun, entertaining, and exciting characters, but I never felt empathetic towards them on any emotional level. I had no feeling towards them. Surely, they are not memorable in any way. For me, they were just kind of there in the story, nothing more. Along with that, was the romance. The romance wasn’t believable or deep as well; it was a nice touch, but not really… necessary.

On a side note, The Nightmare Affair writes like it's meant for a younger YA crowd, which may also explain Dusty's slightly childish tone and character. She's a bit of a naïve character, but it didn't bother me much (it may for others!). Also, the conclusion of the story felt very similar to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (minor spoiler? Sorry!), and it wasn't all that satisfying. I'm curious to see if there will be a sequel, as it isn't settled very well. However, the ending didn't really leave me wanting more.

My final thoughts: The Nightmare Affair has its many flaws and many imperfections here and there, but thankfully, the original, fresh idea saved it's butt for sure. It's worth a try if you love a lighter mystery with a different paranormal concept that's never been done. If you can look past the plain characters and romance, give this one a go!

First intrigued by the New Adult genre, Flight caught my attention from the start. I had read plenty of New Adult contemporaries, but none that were supernatural. I was curious to see how it would all play out. Sadly, Flight was a novel that nearly didn't work out for me at all. This story had poor character development and romance, but luckily, the supernatural creatures bumped it up a star for the last half of the story.

One of the major turnoffs in this novel was that it read like a straight-up contemporary for the first 30% of the book, and for me, that was way too long for it to get to the point of the story. I was pretty much thinking this: "Um, hello? I thought I was supposed to be reading a supernatural story..? I don't see anything supernatural at all… This is NOT what I signed up for." And when the supernatural elements were FINALLY introduced, there wasn't really a plot going on, necessarily, or problem/conflict, until the last quarter of the book. I guess what I'm trying to say is, the plot isn't very well organized.

The insta-love in this story seriously made me want to tear all of my hair out. Levi, the male protagonist, also known as a player, fell in love with Allie (our female protagonist) almost instantly. He fell in love with her mostly because of the physical attraction. Now, I usually take a deep breath and let a relationship like this form into something deeper and actually wait for the love to change into something real rather than something physical. I was waiting, waiting… ! Nothing of this sort happened. It remained a physical attraction the entire time, or at least, there was never a deep, believable romance between Levi and Allie. As for the characters themselves, they didn't really stand out at all, among all of the other characters I've read about in my history of reading.

As I mentioned above, the one thing that saved this book was the supernatural creature, Pterons. It's not TOO creative-- they're basically shape-shifters (not going to spoil what kind though). I enjoyed this concept, and it was interesting to read about. I found myself wanting to know what happened next and what exactly the history of the Pterons was. Flight was also a very quick read, which I didn't mind.

In all, I'm glad I tried out Flight, as I have finally fixed my curiosity for this book. While numerous parts of this book didn't work out for me, the supernatural element did, which I am eternally grateful for. I would recommend Flight to New Adult lovers who wouldn't mind some insta-love and for readers who just need a quick read to pass time.

This New Adult book took the blogosphere by a storm last year and I'm sure it will continue to grow a fan base  especially now that it's been picked up by a publisher!  I'm currently reading it (stupid exams are stopping me from finishing it!) and it's really good so far so I'd urge you to enter the giveaway!
