Let's Talk About... Plagiarism

You're probably thinking this topic is talked about too much after the whole drama concerning one of the 'big' blogs.  I won't be going into that since it happened months ago and I don't really want to be caught up in it.  I wasn't even planning on talking about plagiarism here... But I was plagiarized and I feel if I don't let it all out, I'm going to explode and do something rash like stop blogging for a few weeks.

So... plagiarism.  I didn't think much of it when the topic went viral across the blogosphere. I was still in my happy bubble surrounded by a bunch of other lovely bloggers, thinking it would never affect me.  I mean, who's gonna want to plagiarize me?

This all changed.  I was scrolling through my Dashboard and saw a review for a book that I had recently read and enjoyed.   Interested to see what this blogger thought of it, I clicked on it.  To my utter shock, the review felt startling familiar and upon further inspection, I discovered at least half of it had the EXACT same words as mine with some other sentences tweaked here and there.  First I was horrified followed by complete rage and utter FURY.  How dare someone copy my review?

I emailed the blogger with a request that she take down the review immediately.  The next day, I got her reply... I think this bit pissed me off as much as her copying my work.  She said, 'I know this may sound lame but sometimes you don't realise you are plagiarising...'  Her words, not mine. *Holds in anger*  The second part of her email said this: 'I do admit that a tiny bit I did know I had copied; but that was genuinely because I knew what I wanted to write but I couldn't think of any other way of saying it.'

*Lets out anger* What the hell?!  If she had taken full responsibility and made it clear that she acknowledged she was frikkin' plagiarizing, I wouldn't be this angry since she did apologise and she took down the review.  But still.  Do you think I'm stupid?  Do you think I actually believe you didn't know what you were doing?  Don't even try to deny it.  I am absolutely sure you were fully aware that you were copying me, how can you copy someone and not know?  You made the conscious decision to take my work and pass it off as your own.  Even taking someone's writing and tweaking the words a little is classed as plagiarism (as we all learned a few months ago) let alone taking huge chunks and leaving it totally unedited so that parts are identical to mine.  If you really need to plagiarize, at least don't be lazy about it.

And that second part made me want to pull my hair out and laugh at the same time.  Plagiarizing proves that you don't have your own ideas or thoughts at all.  Oh, because of course my way was the only way to say it.  Personally, I think my reviews are a bit cheesy and I do try to make them more intricate so I am 100% positive no one writes exactly the way I write because I'm a bit weird when writing reviews :/  And OH MY GOD, I always find it hard to put my thoughts into words but do I go and look up someone else's review and think to myself 'Oh, she pinpointed my thoughts perfectly so I'm just gonna copy and paste.'?  No, because I don't want to be labelled a cheat or a thief.  No, I sit at the computer drumming my fingers and make the effort to write an honest and thorough review.  It's a bloody cheek to say you had to copy mine because I had managed to word your thoughts.  I'm sorry but plagiarists know more than a 'tiny bit' that they are copying.  What compels you to take something that someone obviously spent a lot of time on and claim it as your own?  It's just un-believable... It's also unacceptable.  School doesn't accept it, the exam boards don't accept it. No-ONE accepts it!!!

And how can you say you write honest reviews when the words you post aren't even your own? Another thing, when someone emails you to let you know you've been guilty of plagiarism, at least have the decency to take full responsibility and don't give them a lousy excuse.  It's pretty low -.-

I detest all the blogging drama that's been going on and I'm still wondering how the hell I got caught in this one.  I have so much respect for bloggers and to be honest, I fully trust everyone.  I'm not wary at all that someone might come along and 'snatch' my review.  And there are so many amazing people out there who never fail to impress me with their hard work and dedication and I hate how some people completely ruin the image of the blogging community.  I don't appreciate people who betray my trust.  I am just thankful I have a bunch of wonderful blogging friends who would NEVER do such a thing to hurt people like this.

This discussion kinda turned into a rant -.-

What do you think of plagiarism? Have you ever been plagiarized before?  How did you deal with it?

I hope this never ever happens again.  I don't think I'd be able to take it without busting a vessel or something.  So yeah, if you even try to plagiarize me or anyone else, think again.  Would you want someone to plagiarize you?

**Update: Something has just been brought to my attention.  This blogger has 're-written' her review: I sent her an email with a document which highlighted in colour the identical-ness of our reviews and she has only bothered to change around the words of the sentences that I highlighted.  Wow - plagiarism at its peak -.-  Sincerity would be appreciated**

  1. I am so sorry this happened to you :( I can't believe someone did that! I often find it hard to express my feelings about certain books, but I don't copy other peoples! That's just disgraceful :/ I hope this never happens to you again!

  2. Great post Beverley! I'm sorry you got plagiarized and I'm so sorry that person reacted that way! The most professional way for that person to have handled it would have been "I'm sorry I did that, although I can't make excuses for something I knowingly did, but I hope you can forgive me." -.-

I actually haven't been plagiarized (and I seriously doubt I EVER will be, with my horrible reviews) but I think the best thing to do is to just move on and pray that person doesn't plagiarize from you again. Plagiarism to me is wrong no matter WHO does it and what excuse they have. It's still wrong and nobody has an excuse to do it. -.-

    1. Hi! I'm so sorry to hear that you were plagiarized, I would feel so angry and hurt if someone copied my work. It's always horrible when someone DOES plagiarize and that you have to become a little more wary of bloggers. It's sad, that even in the blogging world, someone steals someone's work and lies. We have enough horrible stuff happening in real life that I wish the Book Blogging community could just peaceful and happy, and it is most of the time. :)I hope that no one ever plagiarizes you again. :)

PS. I tried typing a comment on the Ipad last night and I by accident typed the wrong words, so I removed the comment and placed it with this one. :)

  4. Oh no! I'm so sorry that this happened to you!! I haven't been plagiarized but if it did happy to me I would definitely email them about it and hope that it doesn't happen again!

  5. Ohmygosh, that's terrible! If anyone were to copy my reviews, I would be just as livid as you too! There is so much work that goes into making them... it's shocking how someone can just think it alright to take what's yours! I really hope this never happens to you again either, Beverley!

  6. OMG! I'm so sorry that happened to you! I would be so mad if that were me too!

  7. Oh dear, I'm so sorry this happened to you! I have never been plagiarised before (or if I have, I don't know about it) but can understand why it must be so frustrating. Writing reviews takes time and effort and the last thing you want is for someone else to take credit for it. :( I hope you're never plagiarised again Beverley! You'd think people would have learnt by now...

  8. Wow, I can't believe someone would do that to you, Beverley - that's terrible! 'Imitation is the highest form of flattery' SUPPOSEDLY but I think the opposite is true in cases of plagiarism - plagiarisers clearly have no respect for the people whose hard work they are copying.

Sorry this happened to you :(

  9. I'm so sorry for you. We are working hard on our review so even if they aren't perfect they are ours and the idea that someone could just take them and then said something like that...i don't know if i would be devastated or furious or both

  10. That's terrible! I'm pretty sure that I've never been plagiarises before, but then what sort of person would want to steal my posts? Plagiarism is an awful thing and it's bad enough that she actually copied you, but then not fully admitting to it? Disgusting. I would be just as mad as you, if not more so. But I think you handled it really well. Hopefully you will not have to post about this or anything like it again. I also admire you for not naming names, if it'd been me I would've been just itching to reveal them to everyone, but in the end I would've probably done the same as you. As long as the person is ashamed of themselves and sorry and all that… xx

  11. OH MY GOSH! Aw, Beverley, I'm so sorry this happened to you. That's AWFUL! :-( When the big plagiarism scandel first came up to the book blogging communtiy I was on my 'blogging break' so I didn't really hear about it. I totally agree with you and everyone else you has commented too, plagiarism is not acceptable whoever it is and whatever the reason. If I can't think of how to write a certain thing in a review, I go to a thesaurus - not someone else's review!!! It is all a sign of a lack of originality and a big lie.
Thanks for posting and bringing this more to our attention, I hope it never happens to you again (and hopefully not by the same person)! xxx

  12. That is the lamest excuse I ever heard. The person could at least have enough decency to take responsibility for copying your work.

  13. Omg I am so sorry this happened to you. I hate it when it comes to the stage that you feel like pulling out a Copyright symbol.

  14. *RAGE RAGE RAGE RAGE RAGE.* This is freaking ridiculous. This has never happened to me before, but I can feel your RAAAGGE. Like really? If you can't write a review, you're NOT qualified to be a blogger if all you can THINK to do is copy. That is just GRRR RAAWR it makes me angry that this happened to you. And her "revisions"... ? Wow. No. I sincerely hope this doesn't happen again. To anyone. :(

  15. Plagiarism sucks! Big time.
I'm sorry you had to experience this. :(

If a person can't find the words then why post it? Why not wait until they can come up with something or maybe recommend a review instead? -.-

    ReplyDelete
  16. That sucks! That blogger needs to learn about manners! As far as I know, I've never been plagiarized but I hope I can handle it with as much grace as you have.

  17. Wow. So sorry this happened to you. There seems to be an epidemic of plagiarism these days, especially this year. I personally haven't had this experience, but rest assured, if it ever happened to me, I'm sure I'd be acting pretty angry about it too. They should issue a public apology on their blog to you. Or take down the review all together without it being "updated." What is up with bloggers and plagiarism recently and not owning up to their mistakes? *shakes head.*

  18. OMG! Bev that's really bad and I am sorry that happened to you but you know, it only means that you're A-MAZING! and that's why people copy you ;) So just don't bother yourself and I hope that doesn't happen to you again or to anyone really or myself :D I mean we are all here, as book bloggers to just share our thoughts and opinions about books and copying others opinions wouldn't really count so why... :( Thank you for sharing that with us Bev <3

  19. BEEEV! NO WAY! Tell me who she is and I'll freaking punch her face off! Oh my freaking goodness how dare someone do this to you???? God I am so seething mad right now. -.- WTF???? Seriously?? I mean, don't people have any integrity these days?? And especially after what just happened with The Story Siren and all. And then she had the *nerve* to be like 'OH I didn't know. But I did', to you?????? *pouts* This is so unfair!! I am so totally mad on your behalf. You don't deserve this!!!!! I'm going to go before I EXPLODE. :'(

  20. Oh God, Bev, I'm so sorry that happened to you! I can't believe people actually have the audacity to do that. Writing reviews definitely takes work, and I know I spend time staring at the screen trying to think what to write sometimes. If you can't make the effort to write your own work, you shouldn't be a reviewer. To be honest, when I found out about the plagiarism that took place a few months ago, it scared me a little, which is annoying because there are also so many great people out there. And if it happened to me, I would be so. Angry. I really hope you never have to go through this again, and I'm sorry that you ever had to experience it in the first place.

  21. Oh no, I'm so sorry with what happened to you, Beverly. I understand your feeling because I know how hard it is to come up with a good review with you being really honest. I'm not a natural writer so really, it takes me more than an hour to write one. So I would probably be angry too if someone just copied my review I've written so hard. It would have been okay if she just quoted your review and gave credit that it was from your review but he/she took it as his/her own. Hope this never happen again. :)

  22. This is terrible Beverly. So sorry it happened to you. I haven't been plagiarized before (that I know of) but I can see how it would be upsetting. It really takes so much time and effort to put thoughts down. Hope the issue is resolved. :(

    ReplyDelete
  23. So sorry this happened to you! ): But you've done the right thing.<33 It's so hard thinking of ways to sum up your feelings, but that happens to us all... We don't, however, all copy the words of somebody else. :L Hope everything is okay now!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm so sorry that happened to you, Beverley! Such a response would make me want to tear my hair out as well. I haven't been plagiarized before but I totally get how you feel. It's your words and ideas, after all. I'm glad you didn't decide to stop blogging and hope the issue gets taken care of soon :(

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh that sounds horrible, and I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that, Beverley! >_< I'm sure everyone here has a conscience that tells us that plagiarism is wrong, but obviously, it's so much more vivid once you go through it yourself :( Well, at least the girl took down the copied review. Still...saying that she wasn't aware of copying was a bit far...

I hope you feel better soon, and thanks for bringing more notice on this serious issue! <3

  26. Oh my gosh, that's horrible! I've never experienced plagiarism before and hopefully I never will, but I imagine it would make me just as mad as you are. So don't worry about this sounding like a rant haha x) I admire how you handled this and that you didn't let it get to you and stop you from blogging. I hate how so many amazing blogs are disappearing because of this sort of drama :'( Definitely glad that you got it sorted out in the end though and hope you never have to experience something like this again, Beverley! <3

PS. I can't believe I've never commented here even though I follow o.o Your blog is so pretty and perfect!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I perfectly understand your need to write this post, I too would be totally annoyed if I found out that someone had plagiarised my review that I had worked so hard on! I hope the situation gets sorted now and you won't have to deal with it again :(

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ugh, I COMPLETELY understand your rage!! Especially with her responses... first she doesn't realise it and then you says she knew she copied a tiny bit, because she couldn't think of any other way to say it? Really?? Even if it WAS just a tiny bit (and not half), the fact remains... that is still PLAGIARISING. There are an infinite number of ways to put your thoughts into words, as clearly demonstrated by the thousands of reviews for just one book. Which are all unique. Individual. DIFFERENT. Sorry you have to go through this crap, especially for a blogger you follow and obviously read.

I haven't been plagiarsed... to my knowledge *knocks on wood* but a friend of mine had a couple of her reviews copied word for word a few months back, and we discovered the same blogger had done so to a lot of other bloggers. It was SO infuriating and it didn't even happen to me! She never apologised though, she just said something about how many reviews sound the same or some crap.

I guess the one positive thing goes to show you write such amazing reviews that people want to copy? Okay, not really a positive, but you DO write amazing reviews! <3

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh hun, as I told you on Twitter, you write SUPER amazing reviews and it's just normal (BUT UNACCEPTABLE!) that the person feels compelled to plagiarize you. Like you, Bev, I try my best not to get drawn into blogging drama so I feel really bad for you! It must be one of the worst thing, especially since you've chatted with the person before (in comments)! Aww, there's no way I can express my sorry. *offering ice cream again*

Be brave and strong, Bev! <3 You're strong enough to ignore the person and let this become something in the past for you. We will always be there for you!! <3

  30. Wow, I just found your blog, was only just beginning to fall in love with your ADORABLY DIVINE design, when this post caught my interest...started reading it and felt horrible!

I guess you read about plagiarism all the time, but never really take it too seriously because you assume no one will ever want to plagiarize YOU...I mean, right?

I'm so sorry you were plagiarized, dearie. :'(

But, at least that means you're a good writer! (You wouldn't be interested in plagiarizing a piece of crap.) hehe Sorry, just trying to make you feel better. She DID remove it, right?

  31. Just found your blog. I really enjoyed reading this post! I have never been plagiarized and i havent done it either but i know people who do. It makes me so mad because people like us sit and spend a lot of time and hardwork coming up with something good of our own, and they can just copy amd paste and get a result with no work or thought at all.
Im sorry you were plagiarized and i hope it never happens again!

  32. This is something I'm always afraid of.. That I will wonder around in the web and that I'll find my work somewhere else. I hate it when people do stuff like that. When you do something like that, you are a sad person. Bah, I'm sorry to hear that you caught up in this :(

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow that's a load of crap! It sucks that that happened to you... I haven't yet caught anyone plagiarising anything of mine (at least with book blogging). What an unfortunate coincidence that you were just looking around and came upon it. Your blog is amazing (from what I've just seen) - thanks for visiting my blog and commenting! - don't let some sad people who can't quite formulate their thoughts without someone else's work to help out.

Rage is never unnecessary where plagiarism is concerned -- this person stole from you! At least they responded to your email, which, I suppose is more than other people may do.

Please feel free to leave your prettiful thoughts - I LOVE hearing from you and if I could, I'd give you a cupcake for even wanting to comment in the first place! In return, I will try to check out your blog!

*Please note that this blog is award and tag-free, I appreciate the thought but I just don't have time to fulfil the requirements*
